With barely a normal dry season, precipitation is distributed fairly well throughout the year. Tropical disturbance and monsoon weather bring in heavy rains during the months between September and March. Other months are characterized by short periods of dryer days and fine weather except in July and August, when the dry season and gusty northwest monsoon winds intensify .


        The topography is rugged and mountainous, becoming more pronounce towards the central portion on the island. Only about 10 percent of the land area have slope gradients under 8 percent, comprised mainly by fractured and narrow strips of plains generally found near the coastal areas.
